Bella Freud’s 1970 Candle evokes the sexily heady scent of the incense that permeated the decade of free love and rock music. The intoxicating fusion of Frankincense, Myrrh, Oakmoss and Patchouli give way to the lingering base notes of Musk, Sandalwood and Vetivert – imagine the film ‘Almost Famous’ in fragrance form, and you get an idea of its hazily hippy sensuousness. The ideal olfactory accompaniment to an evening at home with your favourite Led Zeppelin record, this makes a gorgeous gift for a laid-back lady or your uber-cool girlfriend-who-has-everything; the perfect balance of masculine yet feminine, alluring yet insouciant… swoon. What’s more, the jar itself makes a gorgeous vase, pen pot or coin collector, long after its contents have been greedily inhaled.
Having made her name as a fashion icon and taste-maker, Bella Freud’s candles are as quirky and covetable as her signature sweaters (donned by the likes of La Moss, Alexa and the lovely Laura Bailey). Housed in chic matte black glassware - complete with a pleasingly weighted ceramic lid to seal in the scent between sessions - and embossed with a graphic white stripe, this makes a stand-out addition to any hearth, bookshelf or bedside table – and the super-sleek aesthetic is only the beginning… Made with hand-poured natural wax infused with the finest essential oils and extracts, this heady candle will fill your rooms with its intoxicating fragrance – even before being lit! However, if you’re able to bring yourself to set a match to it (it’s almost too beautiful to use), it will burn for around 40 hours – transforming your home both visually and aromatically into something you’d see on the pages of ‘at home with Vogue’.

I don't love it or hate it
The design of the candle is really cool, love the black lid and the 1970 font but I am on the fence about the scent. Sometimes it reminds me of something my grandma would have (not in a good way) and other times the scent is okay. Overall definitely not my fav and I won't be ordering it again.

Intoxicating
I fell in love with the description and had to buy. I actually don't think it's hippy at all, and the patchouli isn't paramount (which I wouldn't like) - it's just a wonderful mix of all the listed oils and as soon as I even took the wrapper off, let alone opened the box, the fragrance hit me.. and in a very good way. I won't need to burn this unless er, entertaining. The 'throw' (new one on me but everyone here is using it!) is really strong - and I LOVE that. Subtlety is lost on me with home fragrances - who wants a candle you can just about be aware of? Heady, with no one oil beating the others up. Gorgeous. And not hippy dippy IMHO...Â

No - just no
I really wanted to love this candle as I really like Loving from Bella's collection. But I am sorry to say ...1970 is just awful, to me it is almost sickening. It is very strong but this fragrance is simply not acceptable, very sharp. Maybe some people like it ... I would never buy thsi again and frankly I am disappointed with how bad it smells for the price I poaid.

Plenty of bang for your buck!
These candles are worth every penny, the quality and intensity of the fragrance means it scents the entire room even before being lit. The heady patchouli scent of 1970 is divine and I wouldn't hesitate to re purchase (at which point I think a couple of the others may fall into my basket)
