WHAT IS EID

Eid (also known as Eid al-Fitr) is an Islamic celebration that marks the end of Ramadan, in which Muslims fast from dawn ‘till dusk. “It’s a day of gratitude, reflection and togetherness, where people can celebrate the spiritual growth and discipline gained throughout the month of fasting. It’s also a time for generosity, as giving to those in need (Zakat al-Fitr) is a key part of the occasion” explains Amaal. “On the day of Eid, there is a congregational prayer performed outdoors, followed by celebrations from feasting on delicious homecooked food and exchanging gifts with family, friends and the community – along with wishing each other Eid Mubarak which translates to ‘Have a blessed Eid” adds Farrah.

WHEN IS EID 2025

Unlike many religious celebrations, Eid occurs on a different date each year. Why? Because its official date is dependant on the sighting of the new moon and its cycle. Eid ul-Fitr (the festival of breaking fast) lasts for one day and is expected to take place on Sunday 30th March 2025 or Monday 31st March 2025, depending on the sighting of the moon. In the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr (the celebration) takes place on the first day of Shawwal, which is the tenth month in the Islamic calendar. And while Eid ul-Fitr typically lasts for one day, in many Muslim countries, the celebrations can last for up to three days. These days are usually public holidays, in which families and friends gather and celebrate the end of a month of fasting.

HOW DO WE CELEBRATE EID

“Like every year, I plan to spend Eid with my mother and sisters - I wouldn't change it for the world. Life can get busy, so spending some quality time with one and another is something we all cherish very deeply. My sister will welcome a little girl before Eid, so it'll be her first Eid - which will be different but very exciting. We will wake up early, shower and get dressed before heading to the Mosque to pray our Eid Prayer. Once that's done, we then go to my mother's house where we eat and have fun! We play a "pub-like quiz", which can get very loud. Then we continue to prepare more food while family members drop by to wish one another a 'Happy Eid'.”

“Every year, Eid follows a familiar and cherished routine for me that makes the day feel extra special. It always begins with waking up early, getting dressed in new or special clothes, and heading to the mosque for Eid prayers. After that, we visit family and friends, exchanging warm greetings and give money or gifts, especially to children.

Food plays a big role in our celebrations there’s always a feast with traditional dishes that we look forward to all month. Another important tradition is giving back, whether through charity or by making sure everyone, including neighbours and those in need, feel included in the celebrations. I’ll be spending time visiting relatives and friends, sharing gifts and indulging in some delicious Eid treats. It’s a day filled with love, laughter, and meaningful connections, and no matter where we are, these traditions always bring a sense of joy, togetherness and memorable moments.”

“I embraced Islam 15 years ago and depending on where I was at in my life, the traditions vary. When I lived in the Middle East, my friends (none of whom are Muslim), would organise a delicious breakfast for us all to celebrate Eid and we’d take a day trip to do something fun. For the past 6 years, my husband buys me my yearly bottle of Creed for Eid (used to be Aventus for Her), now it’s Carmina. That’s become a tradition I love, whereas I gift often throughout the year, I don’t wait for a special occasion. With what’s going on around the world, this year I’d like to arrange to spend the day doing something that will benefit others (after Eid prayer).”
