101 GUIDE TO DISCOTHÈQUE

A wide shot, lifestyle image of Discotheque candles with their boxes sat on metallic boxes on a mirrored table in a party setting.

Have you ever wished your night wouldn’t have to end? Well, thanks to best friends and forever dance partners Jessie Willner and Hanover Booth, it doesn’t have to. Launching their home fragrance brand Discothèque between LA and London, the duo bring the glitz, glamour and good times of your favourite nightclub straight to your home. Inspired by clubbing landmarks, each coveted candle relive the sensations and moods of your afterhours outings – no ID necessary!

Giving us VIP access to all things Discothèque, we caught up with founders Jessie Willner and Hanover Booth to shine the strobe light on the brand and and uncover the stories behind its signature scents.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR DISCOTHÈQUECOME ABOUT

Paying tribute to the founders’ shared love of the liberating energy found on a dancefloor, Discothèque brings the party home. “A lot of brands have honoured a time and place through scent, but we felt like there was something different about paying homage to places that were burned into the collective memory of an entire generation and meant something even to the generations that followed” says Hanover. “Clubs held weight for us because it was where so much culture was incepted or changed and they stood as markers of new music, new fashion, new ideas. Anything went. One underground club could spawn genres and define an era. We wanted to create a brand that brought that feeling with you, giving you a little piece of those nights to remember” explains Jessie. Understanding how fragrances can transport you to any time or location, the duo discovered that nightlife, music and scent are intimately intertwined through their immersive sensory experiences. “The brand’s philosophy is to make every day thrilling and to remember these memories through the soundtrack of our fragrances”.

WHAT DOES DISCOTHÈQUESTAND FOR

“Our shared passion for a night out has always played a significant role in our friendship. We’ve worked together for years and as a result travelled the world together, falling in love with each new city by falling in love with its DJs and dancefloors. There were so many countless times we thought, “Please can we just take this exact moment and try to remember it just like this forever?” … and so, we sought to capture our favourite memories through scent, and Discothèque was born” recalls Hanover.

WHAT INSPIRES DISCOTHÈQUE’S SCENT STORIES

From the bestsellingCrisco Disco to the renowned Hacienda, each Discothèque fragrance brings together timeless and unique notes that connote the weird yet wonderful memories you make on a night out. “To bring the candles to life, we spoke to loads of friends and asked them for their greatest club stories, curating a collection of the most unforgettable, profound and bizarre. We connected these memories to scent notes, almost like word association. Creating a fictional world made up of fragrance combinations, we refined out blends with our incredible perfumers, eventually ending up with the perfect symphony of notes, each one coming together beautifully like the world we saw in our imagination” Jessie.

So now we know the scent story behind Discothèque’s alluring aromas, it’s time to get a backstage pass to the brand’s fragrances that reminisce each decade…

70S

Inspired by the iconic discos that thrived throughout the 1970s, Discothèque’s 70s relives a vibrant night on the town – whether that be in New York’s Meatpacking district or on the streets of London and Paris. Encapsulating the spirit of the era’s acceptance, excitement and free spirt, each candle fuses bohemian blends… think freesia with tobacco, sweet grapefruit with suede, not to mention Hawaiian gardenia with whipped cream and vanilla bourbon. Plus, with 45 hours burn time, you needn’t have to hang up your dancing shoes just yet… like we said before – the  night doesn’t have to end.

80S

When we say the Running Man, Robocop and Electric Slide what decade comes to mind? The 80s, of course! Giving everyone the chance to recreate the vibrations of the 1980’s club culture – no matter your birth year – Discothèque’s offerings transform your space into a superclub. While the candle’s gradient glasses recreate the lights that illuminate the dancefloors, their vibrant notes take inspiration from the bar’s signature servings – we’re talking cabernet, whiskey, orange blossom and more. We’ll cheers to that…

With the strike of a match, Discothèque’s 90s scent selection is primed to have you partying like its 1999 (minus the Doc Martens and mini slip dresses). Transporting you to the scenes of yesteryear, these fragrances show no limitations – like the decade’s iconic moves. While Milk!’s bergamot and citrus lemon top notes signify the tangerine skies of Manheim’s sunrise, Le Baron de Paris, Tokyo’s fusion of night blooming jasmine and soft musk symbolises the mystery of the city’s backstreets.
