SHOW YOUR SKIN SOME LOVE WITH HEAD-TO-TOE CARE FOR THE COLDER SEASONS

Cold weather? Warm fires? Too little sunshine? Whatever the culprit, we’re offering some simple swaps to 'reset' your winter skin care regime .

IS YOUR SKIN CRAVING HYDRATION

Temperature changes wreak havoc with hydration levels. The air is less humid (both outdoors, thanks to the cold air and indoors, thanks to cranked-up heating) which means we’re all undoubtedly feeling (and looking) a little bit parched. The answer? Swap your foaming cleansers for oils, balms or cherishing gels (such as KraveBeauty's Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser) for a more nourishing cleanse. Plus, opt for humectants like hyaluronic acid (found in Drunk Elephant's B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum), polyglutamic acid and glycerin to draw water into the skin and lock in moisture. Adding a hydrating face mist into your routine will also help to quench your thirsty complexion and keep it looking bouncy.

Don’t forget to also change up your moisturiser, switching to one that includes ultra-hydrating (and brightening!) ingredients – things like squalane, jojoba or cloudberry oil – which will nourish and feed the skin without smothering oil-prone, congested complexions (we LOVE Glow Recipe's Cloudberry Bright Moisture Cream for a burst of dew-boosting hydration that ramps up the brightness). And for a richer texture, look for ingredients such as shea butter, sweet almond oil and marula.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

It’s hard to avoid overindulging in winter (and quite frankly, why should we)? But all the excesses can lead to unwelcome breakouts due to an increase in processed food, >alcohol intake and sugar consumption. So, if you want your skin to cooperate, start by using clarifying formulas to intensely cleanse and remove impurities before they amount to anything. Look for products with low levels of exfoliants as you want to be able to use them daily without over-exfoliating and aggravating your skin.

GLOW GONE AWOL?

Once again, due to increased dryness, your skin can look a little dull at the time of year. Try a face mask with instant brightening properties and ingredients like AHAs and enzymes to buff away dead skin cells that can cause the skin to look dull, then bolster skin's night-time repair processes with a replenishing treatment. Ole Henriksen's Après-Skin Rich Rescue Cream revitalises compromised complexions and boosts barrier function with its super-charged cocktail of fruit and nut butters, ceramides and moisture-binding electrolytes.

CHAPPED LIPS RUINING YOUR POUT

That same dreaded coupling of cold air outside and heated air inside is what makes chapped lips so common in winter. But with all that under-the-mistletoe action waiting for you, sore, cracked and scaly lips are the last thing you need.

Rule number one? Stop licking your lips – you’ll only make things worse. Then use an exfoliating lip scrub to slough away any flaking cells before applying a conditioning lip balm, oil or butter. Adding an overnight lip mask works wonders for keeping your pout plump and chap free too.

BE EXTRA KIND TO YOUR HANDS

Cold weather – is there anything it doesn’t impact? Your hands are yet another part of your body likely to suffer the consequences of winter, becoming dry, red, sore and scaly. And that’s only intensified by the need to scrub and sanitise to avoid catching any dreaded lurgy.

Invest in a non-stripping hand wash and hand sanitiser to prevent your mitts from drying out. Carry a hand cream in your bag at all times and remember to reapply post-wash. Sleeping in a pair of moisturising gloves with your hands drenched in your favourite hand treatment will help keep them silky and smooth throughout the winter months, too.

QUENCH THIRSY TRESSES

Locks can look limp and lacklustre due to loss of moisture in the air. To avoid losing hydration and disrupting the natural oil balance in your hair, try cutting down on wash days in the winter months. Instead, reach for a dry shampoo in-between washes that will keep your hair looking, feeling and smelling fresh. It's also important to replenish moisture. How? A hair oil or hair mask should do the trick! They not only deliver intense hydration (something we all need through winter), but it also helps to repair any existing damage by helping to strengthen your mane and seal cuticles.

DON’T FORGET TO LOVE YOUR LIMBS

Last, but by no means least, it’s not just your facial skin care ritual that needs updating as the seasons change. Your body care regime will also benefit from a few simple tweaks (just because you’re wrapped up in multiple layers, this doesn’t mean your limbs don’t need attention!). Winter skin can often feel dull and grey – due to the lack of sunlight and vitamin D – so get your glow back by exfoliating from head to toe using a body scrub or polish. It’s also super important to keep moisture levels replenished, so swap lightweight lotions for richer, restorative formulations or a body oil.

With a change-up in your winter skin care routine, your winter skin woes will soon be a thing of the past.
